Guild Committees
Artists' Door: provides commissionaire services on performance nights, ensuring that only authorised people are allowed backstage.
Awards: is responsible for the Career Development Grant program, the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions for the district and support to students and their opera productions at the University of British Columbia and the Vancouver Academy of Music.
Education: assists with rehearsal receptions for VOIS, organizes a Christmas fundraiser and judges children's artwork contest.
Guild Centre: staffs the VOG table in the theatre lobby prior to the performance and during intermission to promote Guild activities and encourage membership.
Membership: oversees membership activities such as recruitment, recognition and maintenance of databases.
Newsletter: publishes s newsletter three times a year, including obtaining, editing and collating materials and dstribution.
Publicity: helps publicize various Guild events through production and distribution of posters, press releases, web page, etc.
Rehearsal Refreshments: provides light refreshments to orchestra, chorus, stars and staff during rehearsals and to Opera Speaks forum attendees.
Special Events: plans and oversees events and other initiatives to raise funds for the Guild.
Telephone: two or three times a year the Opera Guild requires volunteers to spread the word about special events.
Tours: plans and organizes interesting opera tours.
Transportation: assists opera performers by picking them up on arrival at the airport, and at times provides other assistance such as running errands.
Mission
The mission of the Vancouver Opera Guild is carried out, in part, by Guild committees and by other volunteer opportunities.
The Guild supports educational programs such as Vancouver Opera in the Schools and supports young talent through the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions held each November and the Career Development Grant which is given annually.
The Guild’s Membership in Opera Volunteers International
Opera Volunteers International (OVI) is a nonprofit group that brings together volunteers who support opera companies in communities everywhere, from the US and Canada to Mexico and Australia. OVI champions, shares and publicizes its member organizations’ successful ideas and projects. OVI continues to expand as it serves new members every year. The Vancouver Opera Guild (VOG) has been an active OVI member for many years, participating in its conferences and special events. The Guild and several of its members have received a number of OVI awards and honours including several Partners in Excellence Awards and Projects of Special Merit, as well as a Matching Grant.
The next OVI event is the OVI Conference in Los Angeles September 23 – 26 2010 at The Four Star Millenium Biltmore Hotel. For registration and conference information please click here.
