The Vancouver Opera Guild invites you to join its exciting fall tour to Los Angeles and San Diego. Under the leadership of General Director Plácido Domingo, LA Opera has become the United States fourth largest opera company in just over a quarter-century of existence. San Diego Opera overcame financial difficulties in 2014 thanks to an out-pouring of public support and encouragement from opera organizations throughout the U.S. and is now a widely respected member of the international opera community. This is the Vancouver Opera Guild’s fifth tour to Los Angeles and its first to San Diego. It features two operas in LA, one in San Diego and visits to the Getty Center and Huntington Library.

Nabucco by Verdi

In Thaddeus Strassberger’s production, the towering biblical drama is exquisitely presented as it might have been staged at its 1842 premiere at Teatro alla Scala. Plácido Domingo continues his astonishing exploration of the Verdi baritone repertory with his portrayal of the title role, with one of today’s brightest stars, Liudmyla Monastyrska, making her company debut as the king’s terrifying daughter, Abigaille. James Conlon conducts.

The Pearl Fishers by Bizet

A beautifully detailed staging, complete with stunning special effects, brings an exotic story to life. Soprano Nino Machaidze, one of LA Opera’s favourite leading ladies, returns as a veiled priestess with a hidden past, pursued by two lifelong friends and romantic rivals. The complicated triangle pushes forbidden love into a final struggle for life and death, until a nearly forgotten secret saves the day. The ravishing score features a rapturous duet for the two rivals that has become one of opera’s all-time greatest hits. Plácido Domingo conducts.

The Pirates of Penzance by Gilbert & Sullivan

Gilbert brings the best patter song in all of opera and Sullivan delights us with catchy tunes in this funny operetta. Add San Diego Opera favourite Greer Grimsley and his real-life singing family in the lead roles and you’ll be hooked on this swashbuckling favourite about love, laughter and loyalty.
