Nominating Committee Update to Membership
May 17, 2017
Dear Vancouver Opera Guild Members:
I’m sorry to report to you that since my letter of April 27, the Guild’s situation with respect to nominations for Board and Executive positions for the coming 2-year and 3-year terms has remained largely unchanged. There have been numerous expressions of concern and dismay, and offers of help with, but not chairing of Rehearsal Refreshments, but the Committee has received no offers to chair Rehearsal Refreshments or Special Events, and none from anyone qualified and able to serve as either President or President-Elect for the full 2-year term.
We have, however, received one offer from a very experienced and highly-qualified member who is willing to serve as President next year. Her offer, though, comes with two conditions:
1) She is willing to serve for only one year.
2) Her offer is contingent upon there being a candidate for President-Elect in place, willing to step up to the Presidency the following year.
So I am appealing to you all now to think again. If you couldn’t see your way clear to serving as President next year, might you be able to contemplate doing so in 2018-20? Is there a complication in your life at present that might no longer be an impediment by then? The chief duty of the President-Elect, apart from attending Executive and Board meetings and participating in discussions and decision-making there, is simply to study the role of President and prepare yourself to take it on when your term ends—it’s not an onerous position. Please give this situation and its consequences your serious consideration!
As I said last month, I cannot overstate the gravity of the situation facing us. I do not see how we can function without a President to plan the schedule for the year and co-ordinate the work of the committees, nor a President-elect to provide back-up and sustainability. The Guild has a long and proud history of service to Vancouver Opera and of support to promising young singers. This is the precious legacy which we are in grave danger of losing!
If you can see your way clear to serving in any of the still-vacant leadership capacities, please get in touch with me as soon as possible. You can reach me at 604-447-7779 or at email@example.com.
THERE WILL BE an Extraordinary General Meeting of the Guild on Saturday, June 10, 10:00 am. at the O’Brian Centre, to discuss the future of the Guild. I hope that most of you will be able to attend. Please RSVP to me (firstname.lastname@example.org or 604-447-7779) as we will need to know how many chairs to set out.
Acting President and Chair, Nominating Committee
